A Study on the Crime Rate of Problem Drinking & An Alternative Adequate Policy

Abstract
This is an exploratory study to describe the relation between criminal acts and problem-drinking in Korea. The Sample in this study was drawn from a detention house of Uijeongbu Public Prosecutors Office. This research has been carried out for 3 years, from January 1999 to December 2001.
The results are as follows:
1. This study showed that 65.6% of murder, 63.7% of rape, 60.2% of violence, 56.8% of robbery, 50.6% of traffic accidents, 29,7% of theft in 1999, 64% of robbery, 62.2% of violence, 58.3% of murders, 57.2% of rape in 2000, 63.7% of traffic accident, 62.4% of violence, 62.2% of murders, 53.8% of rape, 40.2% of robbery in 2001 were related to alcohol-related problems.
2. Their average age are 38 years old, and 50.9% of their criminal acts was a directly or indirectly connected with alcohol - related problems. And the average of their first drinking experience was 19,6 year old.
In conclusion, this research suggests that problem drinking of criminals is prevalent and serious. Therefore, it is necessary for us to educate all criminals about the effect of problem drinking and to develop Alcohol-related education program.
